Welcome to our first edition of “This month in eye health!” Every month I’ll be taking a look at news and events taking place each month that are influencing best eye health for researchers, physicians and patients alike.

I’m glad we are starting with September. I live outside of Seattle and September in Seattle is beautiful. It’s certainly a time when you value good vision that allows you to see the beautiful weather and the season starting to change. So it’s only fitting that we have a few occasions for patients to look out for their eye health this month.

For one, it’s Healthy Aging Month. To celebrate, I’m writing about the top things you should do for your eye health when you turn 50.

This month also marks Sports and Home Eye Safety Month. Did you know that every 13 minutes, an emergency room treats a sports-related eye injury? Learn more from Prevent Blindness America about protecting your eyes from common sports or household injuries.

Finally, for physicians, the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) kicks off its 2009 Retina Congress on Sept. 30. This five day members-only meeting between ASRS, The Macula Society and Retina Society promises to deliver exciting research and discussions on vitreoretinal information and technology.

Have a healthy and eye-safe September!
