Because more than one million people suffer from eye injuries each year in the U.S., The American Association of Ophthalmology is doing its part by declaring October as Eye Injury Prevention Month. Did you know that 90% of eye injuries can be prevented by protective eye wear? You can learn more about what eye wear is right for what activity and other helpful tips on AAO’s website.

With Halloween just around the corner, Prevent Blindness America is also focused on eye safety. Halloween Safety Month educates families with young children and teens on how to “avoid scary accidents this Halloween.” Check out their fact sheet if you’re planning on celebrating with costumes, props and parties.

And while patients prep for trick or treating, their ophthalmologists will gather in San Francisco from Oct. 24 to 27 for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s 2009 Joint Meeting with the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology. This meeting is fundamental for learning more about the most recent advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease. Expect a lot of important eye care news and updates to come out of this event.

And finally, this month you can find me speaking at the 2009 Boston Biotech R& D Conference to present the latest news from Acucela R&D programs. Following the conference on Oct. 27, I will be sure to update you on my presentation.
