One of Dr. Ryo Kubota’s primary focus areas of research at Acucela is dry age-related macular degeneration, or “dry AMD.” This eye disease affects more than 26 million people worldwide and is the leading cause of blindness in people over age 50. Still, there is no cure or currently approved treatment for dry AMD. Acucela is also working on a treatment for dry eye, which has more than 10 million sufferers in the U.S. alone.
